Watermelon Slush is not only super tasty, it’s super easy to make, too. The kids will love to help make … and enjoy … this perfect-for-warm-weather-sipping slush!

I really love the concept of using a recipe you know works as a springboard for creating new recipes and versions of something. For me, that’s the most fun part of cooking!

And do you want to know why this kid-friendly version came about?

Because when our 7-year-old Little Miss H. saw me making Watermelon Rum Slush and was told it was for grown-ups only, there was no way she was going to be left out of the watermelon fun. Nope, wasn’t going to happen. See, Little Miss H. absolutely loves to try new foods, tasting just about anything at least once to know and experience what’s it’s like. And when I’m in the kitchen creating recipes, she’s usually right there standing on her little stool with me … grabbing spoons out of the drawer to taste each ingredient and the results at every step of the way.

So it’ll come as no surprise, I’m sure, that the first words out of her mouth when I told her the rum slush was for grown-ups only were, “But I want to try some!”

This kid-friendly version does come out a little bit sweeter than the rum version, since it doesn’t have that little “bite” from the rum. But that extra sweetness works just perfectly with the kids’ pallet. And I’ve got to say, my grown-up pallet is just fine with it, too.

Watermelon Slush is not only super tasty, it’s super easy to make, too. The kids can definitely help.

Just cube some watermelon, puree it in a food processor or blender, strain the puree, mix it with a small bit of sugar and fresh lemon juice and then freeze. That’s it!

Once the watermelon mixture is frozen, scrape it with a large spoon and scoop it into glasses. Top each glass with a bit of 7-up or Sprite to create a slushee, and you’re good to go with one tasty and refreshing kid-friendly Watermelon Slush.



6 c. watermelon cubes, seeds removed
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice
7-Up or Sprite for serving


Place watermelon cubes in a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. Place a strainer over a large bowl or 9×13-inch glass baking dish. Pour processed watermelon through the strainer to remove the pulp, reserving the strained juice.

Stir granulated sugar and lemon juice into the watermelon juice until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Place the bowl or baking dish in the freezer and freeze the mixture for 2 to 3 hours, stirring with a fork every 45 minutes or so to break up ice crystals.

When ready to serve, scrape the watermelon slush with a large spoon to create “shavings.” Spoon slush shavings into a glass, filling the glass about 3/4 full. Pour in a little 7-Up or Sprite and stir. Garnish as desired.
